Hexagon cut sapphires are rarer but becoming increasingly popular, their unique geometry makes them a stand out feature. The hexagon can be cut similar to a round brilliant cut which maximises brilliance (sparkle), or in a step cut fashion similar to that of an emerald or asscher cut, giving it a ‘hall of mirrors’ type feel. Hexagon cut sapphires are a popular choice for use in engagement rings, because of their unique shape and beauty.
With six sides, hexagons are the perfect compromise between circularity and angularity. Sitting perfectly between a triangle and a circle this shape has angles allowing for the best torque, and is also the shape that allows for maximum space while minimising boundaries. This is why honeybees use this to make their honeycomb, as it gives maximum space for honey with as little wax as possible. Hexagons are a symbol of time, order and meaning. They are the building blocks of life – it is at the molecular core of water, the centre of a snowflake is a hexagon, it forms the chains of DNA, and it is even the structure behind sapphire mineral itself!
