Oval sapphires range from a fairly round one to an elongated oval. The elongated shape is an elegant one for the finger which gives length and can make the stone appear larger than other stones of the same weight.
The oval shape gets its name from the Latin word ovum which translates to “egg”. In ancient times, and even still today, the shape represents rebirth, fertility, and even immortality.
Oval Sapphires are usually cut into cabochons, which is a type of cut that has a rounded top and a flat bottom. Oval Sapphires can also be faceted, which means they have distinct flat surfaces that reflect light and give the gemstone a sparkling appearance
